Reuniting lost pets with their owners is a service the staff at the
Montgomery Humane Society finds particularly rewarding.
We provide the only centralized lost and found animal service
in the Montgomery area. Our efforts result in almost 1000
happy homecomings each year.
Tips for preventing the loss of a pet
If you see a stray dog in your neighborhood, and you live in:
- Montgomery City Limits-Call the Montgomery Police Department Animal Control at 241-2970
- Montgomery County (outside the city limits of Montgomery) - Call Montgomery Humane Society at 334.409.0622 x208
Have you recently lost or found a pet?
Tips for finding a pet/owner
You may report a lost or found animal by phone or in person. If you report a lost pet by telephone, you must come to the shelter to personally look for your dog. Only you know your dog.
Call the shelter at 409-0622 to report a lost or found pet. The information will be kept in our files to attempt to match
against incoming animals to the shelter or to "found" calls. When you report a pet, please make sure you provide all
of the following information:
- Your contact information: please leave full name, address, and phone numbers
where you can be reached day or night.
- Type of animal and whether it is lost or found.
- Where the animal was lost or found and when.
- The primary breed of the animal (or best guess if it is a mixed breed)
- Fur color and length
- Male or Female and whether it is spayed or neutered
- Approximate weight and age
- Shape of the ears (erect, floppy, or tipped)
- Any distinguishing marks
- Was it wearing a collar and what color?
- The length of the tail
If you later find your pet, please let us know so we can remove you from our
records.
It is MHS policy that patrons must come in person to identify their pet. Because of the large number of animals we receive at the shelter each year, it is difficult to accurately identify a pet simply on the basis of a telephone description. We hold all stray animals in the animal control area for five (5) working days. After the five holding days the animal is evaluated for possible adoption.
